Alltech celebrates the launch of Pearse Lyons Reserve
4 Aug 2010
[Lexington, KENTUCKY] – This evening at Alltech’s Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company in the heart of downtown Lexington, Alltech president and founder Dr. T. Pearse Lyons, unveiled a decades-old dream:  Pearse Lyons Reserve, Kentucky’s first malt whiskey since 1919.

A devotee of brewing and distilling even before completing his Ph.D. in yeast fermentation, Lyons honed the craft working at distilleries in his native Ireland. Five generations of coopers hail from Lyons’ family and whiskey-making is indeed a family tradition: Lyons’ grandfather proudly earned his living as a master cooper and his son continues the family legacy today, having earned his Ph.D. in brewing and distilling in Scotland.  Lyons vowed as a young man that he would one day have his own whiskey.

Pearse Lyons Reserve is noticeably smooth, due in part to its double-distillation in copper pot stills from Forsyth’s in Scotland.  Produced in the old-world tradition of whiskey creation, Pearse Lyons Reserve also utilizes a robust, proprietary yeast strain designed by Alltech specifically for distillation.

This malt whiskey is the newest offering on a long list of beverage innovations for Alltech.  In 1999, Alltech’s Lexington Brewing Company was originated and began churning out award-winning beers like Kentucky Ale, Kentucky Light, and the cult-favorite, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale which is the official beer of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.   Recently, a unique bourbon coffee drink reminiscent of an Irish coffee, Bluegrass Sundown, was introduced as well.

Launched on his birthday, Dr. Lyons expressed nothing but enthusiasm and passion “What a special time for Alltech as we launch Kentucky’s first malt whiskey in nearly a century and at such an exciting time as we count down the last 50 days to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.”
